I’ve recently spent a lot of time thinking about life and death and what I really value. Deep. I know. (The Good Husband has forever said I need to practice shallow. 🤣)
When considering big, existential questions — Why are we here? What is purpose and how do we fulfill it? What matters in the end? What comes next? — I always find my answers rooted in relationships and connections, the way we refine and experience them; and how they’re represented in our lives.
So here you go… a poem about relationship and connection… and chocolate!
The chocolates you sent
have become the
highlight of every evening.
After they arrived,
I nestled the padded,
lined, lilac box
in the freezer
protected by peas
and edamame.
Every evening
I fix dinner and
take. one. piece.
from the cooled
jeweled box.
I set it on a
fancy napkin
and it rises
to the perfect temp.
Later, dishes washed and away,
I settle into my spot
and — with intention — bite off
precisely. one. third.
That third melts on my tongue…
Then the next…
Then the last…
Oh!
The pleasure
this gift from you
gives to me.

Oh, I love this! I can taste the chocolate, which gives me a lot of pleasure.
I'm not sure I fathom the self control needed to eat only one piece of chocolate a day, but this poem almost makes me want to do so. The precision and delicacy of the line breaks feels like a perfect form that echoes the speaker's deliberate and patient savoring of the ritual of the chocolate. What a delight.
I especially like:
"protected by peas
and edamame"
and
"the cooled
jeweled box."
