“As soon as I began exploring the ways I could be grateful for the hard stuff, I no longer felt like the outer-world was the sole dictator of what was happening in my inner-world.”
I became a fan of
several years ago after a friend suggested I read her work when my rheumatoid arthritis raged out of control. She is now Colorado’s Poet Laureate and her writing strikes a chord with hundreds of thousands of people. She is a treasure, reading her work is a pleasure, and she prompted this poem:Capable
Gratitude for the hard stuff
Doesn’t usually
Come naturally
Most of the time, most of us
Have to work for it
Earn it
By wading through the murky messes
Left behind by chance and choices
And by deciding how to be
when we reach the other side of that swamp
Where ease offers reprieve from suffering
Getting there is never a party, an easy path, a romp
But when we reach that point, grab hold, hang on
To gratitude
What it provides — the balm
Is worth it
Because on that isle of calm
We can look inward and know
We’ve grown strong
We are capable
Able
To go on

Love it, Kim. Gratitude is so key. I love Andrea Gibson's work too; I only discovered her a few months ago. Excellent reading once again.
